SOUTHREPPS CHORALE brings you MUSIC FOR A SUMMER EVENING
This concert programme has been chosen by our new Musical Director, Dr Susannah Self, who took over leadership of the Chorale in April, upon the retirement of our founder Stephen Richards after thirteen years.
This programme provides a taste of the wide variety of music which we enjoy, from Vivaldi to Leonard Bernstein.
The Vivaldi Gloria, originally written to support a girls’ orphanage in Venice, is a joyful affirmation of faith, expressed with beauty, energy and power. It comes with a clear and simple sound, yet has many expressive moments in its twelve parts. We welcome soloists Alexandra Bryant (soprano) and Tamsin Jones (alto), with Cathy Al-Bay (piano) and David Ballard (organ). A bridge across into the nineteenth century brings us to the much-loved Cantique de Jean Racine by Gabriel Faure. This piece too, is a work of praise; its introduction comprises a rich male voice section, developing into the full sound of the four-part choir.
In total contrast, we conclude with pieces from the much-loved twentieth- century version of Romeo & Juliet, with words by Stephen Sondheim set to music by Leonard Bernstein in his vibrant work, West Side Story.
We look forward to welcoming you to share this lovely evening of music, with refreshments to follow the concert.
